Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day.
Especially around here.
Between the river and the fountains turning green, the nightly bagpipe parades, the swarm of leprechaun top hats, the “remnants” of drunkards staggering out of the bars…the spirit of St. Paddy infuses itself into every corner of Chicago.
It’s like the Emerald City.
But without the munchkins.
And lots of vomit.
About the dye…
Rest assured, it’s non-toxic and perfectly safe. The same stuff is used all over the world by sewer/water reclamation folks to monitor flow rates. Odd fact: it comes out of the canisters bright orange.
Ironically, my little one is mostly Irish, despite the very Spanish last name and her straight brown hair! I think St. Patty’s day is going to be big in our household! I love the pictures of the green river…it sounds like there’s a lot of fun going on (except for the straggling drunkards!)
This is hilarious! I only wish you were local to come to my St. Patrick’s Day event, which although very high-end in nature, is sure to devolve into some priceless bad behavior. Happy St. Paddy’s early!

That is so amazing to look at! I want it to be that color all the time!
oooo i’ve been to Chicago many times for St Patty’s but never caught the boats actually dispensing the dye! that is so cool! if you haven’t yet check out Gaelic Storm next year, they play at the House of Blues every year for st patty’s. a super rowdy irish band, it’s a blast! unfortunately this year we could not make it 🙁 but we saw them the week before in Columbus OH so it’s almost as good.
Uh, I used to live in Boston and I thought they were intense about St. Pat. Can’t lie, though. I’d kinda like to see this.
o purty thing!
ok, i have to ask –ru really 1/16 Uzbeckistanian?
Savannah Georgia is another city BIG on St Patricks Day. They don’t turn the river green (well, it leaks into the ocean…) but the fountains turn green which is really cool, and they have a parade and lots of people celebrating!!! Everyone is happy. Cool to see other places that do the same!
i love how it STAYS green for weeks afterwards! now we can track those asian carp you’re sending to MN! HA!
fascinating about the orange! i wonder if that’s how they make the protestants feel about living there! (the ELCA HQ is located in chicago, the largest lutheran denomination).
The green kind of grosses me out a little bit. No offense to the Irish!…just sayin’. iccckkk
