I need a new headboard.
Actually, that’s misleading – I don’t have a current headboard.
So it’s not really new.
I have never itown y’all a photo of my current bedroom because I have never really decorated it properly. It is lacking in headboard. It just doesn’t seem complete without it.
For many years I had a king sized bed and it had some big fancy modern thing…then life exploded and I downsized to a tiny apartment. For a while I slept on an old mattress on the floor that was salvaged from one of our guest bedrooms…. then I bought the cheapest double bed I could buy (big mistake – it started shredding after 4 months)…until finally, I eventually upgraded to the basic full size set I have now. And I love it. The mattress is high density foam, which is something I cannot recommend enough to people with chronic back issues. I used to have mornings where I would crawl out of bed and hobble to the shower. I couldn’t even stand up without 5 minutes of hot water to help me straighten out. Since buying this mattress, I have only had one morning like that, and that was because I was sleeping in a hotel. Once you get used to sleeping on a truly great mattress, it’s hard to go back (no pun intended).
If you are seriously looking, this place sells at a bargain price. Shipping is free. I have now turned five other friends/family members into customers, all of whom agree with me, it was the best money they ever spent.
Was I talking about sequins? Oh crap. Okay, sorry, I got distracted. So I need a headboard. I keep thinking I’ll see one at an antique fair or thrift store that I can dress up, but in over a year of looking, I have yet to find something suitable.
Problem is that I’m picky. Very picky.
I do not want wood. I do not want metal. A big brass Bedknobs and Broomsticks bed would be awesome but they don’t come around too often!
I want it to be soft, preferably fabric. I thought about making a custom piece by stapling fabric to plywood, but I want the fabric to be removable for cleaning (in addition to back problems I also have vicious allergies). Then I thought I might hang a Middle Eastern rug up, but I fear it would be scruffy and Lola would try to use it as vertical a scratching post. Then I thought I would use a quilt, but I’m having a hard time finding a quilt large enough that I can afford that doesn’t scream out for a country goose jamboree.
Like I said, I am picky.

So now I’m thinking Morocco. A Moroccan wedding blanket to be specific. They are so soft and cuddly, but also yet so sparkly. There is an Earthen Liberace-esque charm to them that I just love. Downside: they are not cheap. I mean, for something handmade that will be treasured for a long time, I suppose a few hundred bucks is a drop-dead bargain, but for me, for something that I don’t really need, it’s a lot. Plus there’s shipping and blah blah blah.
Anyway. I’m thinking I might be able to DIY something according to my taste. It’s just white wool and silver sequins, right? How hard could it be?
Stay tuned….

Crap, Peaches. I didn’t need to know those things existed. I could have gone on with my life not knowing that gorgeous , soft, glittering blankets were available as bedding options, and I would have been perfectly content with my life.
And now I need one.

I know right? How can we go on without this in our lives?!

Check it out. Search headboards and be amazed. Fabric is SO TRENDY, right now. Love the wall-mounted versions. We are in the midst of many projects and just completed master bedroom.
Can’t do memory foam, though…. just went through an enormous hassle to return a Serta King… the smell made me extremely physically ill… formaldehyde. Did you know? Hubby not bothered… but I’m sensitive. No one tells upon purchase that it should air out in bedroom for about ten days. Once I heard “formaldehyde”, it had to leave.

Holy cats, that would be a hassle! The nice thing about foam mattresses is they come all compact in those boxes…when the expanding starts, well. You can’t put toothpaste back in the tube!
Yeah, I know what you mean about foam. From what I understand, most types of polyester off-gasses formaldehyde. It gets significantly worse when the item is sealed for long periods of time, only for the gas to release in one big toxic burp. When I worked in retail, just opening boxes of stuff sealed in bags from overseas would feel like a romp through a toxic waste. Blech! This place where I got my mattress reports that they don’t vaccuum compact or seal off until the item ships, so I think that cut it down quite a bit. I noticed a slight whiff at first, but it was gone 10 minutes later. Plus, it came from Missouri. I’m overly fond of most anything from Missouri.

A designer friend of mine just told me about the fabric headboard she made for her bedroom; it took her a single afternoon. She started with a big piece of plywood, to which she staple-gunned quilt batting; then (here comes the genius part) she folded a Marimekko sheet and sewed the two sides together—making, basically, a giant pillowcase, closed on the top and the sides and open on the bottom. The case fits snugly over the plywood, but she can remove it for washing when she needs to. Brilliant.

That is a great idea!

Hi! OK, this is a totally serious offer. I am a beginner quilter – I am just finishing the binding off my 3rd ever quilt (I’ll send you a pic as soon as its done!). I could make you a quilt of your choice (within some reason – I don’t have mad quilting skillz yet), with your choice of pattern and fabric. I will do it for just the cost of materials. There are a lot of beautiful modern patterns these days, or you could design something yourself!
Just a thought – I am totally serious, though. It will take some time, probably several months, but would be an honor!
The cat scratching thing might still be a problem, though… but maybe not.
Love the blankets, too, though!

Eulalia, you are too kind! Thank you for offering. I think the idea of giving a quilt to someone is an amazing idea, but give it to someone who you know and love. I am so flattered, but it is far to precious of a gift to give away over the internet 🙂
Keep up with the sewing, though. That is a gift in itself!

Moroccan wedding blankets are beautiful, and I finally got one that actually has red and blue and yellow patterns in it, couldn’t resist plus it was only about $220 for a size that totally covers my couch, at the moment, though it may end up on the wall. I did want to let you know that they are quite rustic in feeling, and not really sure it would in reality suit your taste…..they look the best in minimal white, black and grey spaces with a little bit of natural wood, in my humble opinion. So what I’m saying is, I think a DIY version might in fact be more suited to your style! Get sequined trim and make some horizontal stripes with it, and maybe alternate with some sort of other trim. You could do this on a woven beadspread from a Pier 1/thrift store with 70’s stuff, and get a similar effect. Maybe some close up photos of how they do the sequins will also be helpful, will take some photos of mine in the next few days, and let you know! all the best!

The headboard you showcased at the top of the post looks AhMAYzing!!! Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

If you can come up with some concoction of a Moroccan wedding blanket, then my hat is off to you. Little jealous of your creative savvy. Eh, I’m over the jealousy and am just excited. Am staying tuned.
