My pom pom obsession continues. This time it’s on the tree.
So easy to make. So easy. I may have gotten distracted by a Harry Potter marathon (damn you Disney Family channel!) and before you know it…
So, I need to give credit on the inspiration here. Last summer, Jaderbomb made some awesome pom pom garland with black and white baker’s twine and I thought I WANT THAT. I WANT THAT BAD.
My tree has a lot of crap on it and black and white stripes have way of tying together color chaos. Thing was, I needed a heftier version to stand up to my Christmas tree. Something that wouldn’t get lost in the ornaments. For a while I thought about using alternating white/black beads or buttons….then I was walking down the dollar aisle at Michael’s when I spotted some striped straws. Perfect!
Want to make some? Good news. It couldn’t be easier.
No big tutorial here because I suspect you will understand this, but I will give you a couple of tips I came about the hard way.
- Cut your straw pieces shorter than your needle. It’ll be easier to grab the needle when coming out the other end. Also, try to cut the straws with a super sharp scissors. Ragged edges make inserting the needles a pain in the butt.
- Your chain will grow longer faster if you use one pom pom between each length of straw, but it will be much funkier if you mix multiple pom poms. Put a purple pom next to a green — see what happens. I dare you!
- I used button thread here, but you could use dental floss as well. Just make it thick. I would not recommend just regular all-purpose thread, as it will become tangled in storage. Your call.
Now my tree is covered in pompoms (and birds) and I’m giddy just looking at it. More on the tree to come next week.
Thanks again to Jaderbomb for the original inspiration!
Also, anyone looking to make your own pom poms? Here is a super easy tutorial (and a great idea for a winter wreath!)

For some reason your comment reminded me of the time George said “Sweet Fancy Moses” to Elaine’s dancing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQu_NLRvULM

Peaches, this is fun. I might make this for my tree too. My tree also has a lot of crap on it but the actual tree is black so I will have to go with a different color striped straw.

Love this, will be making it for my tree. Also love the red sweater dress with the black santa-ish belt.

Festive! It belongs to my friend Kiki — I believe she got it Old Navy.

I love the idea of using straws as spacers! I made some pom pom garland for the tree this year, but just used metallic gold thread to string them. So it’s colorful AND sparkly – yay!
PEACHES
Ooooo! colorful and sparkly — my favorite combo!

Love this!! You can never have too many pom poms.

After you take the tree down, this gets draped somewhere else and left up all year, right?

I’m going to make this for my cats – their own Christmas decoration, they’ll LOVE it!

I made this tonight. It’s so girly and sassy. I can’t wait to see my husband’s face when he sees it adorning EVERYTHING!

Where do you find your paper straws?
Shannon
Peach says she got them from the dollar aisle at Michael’s.

Hey if anyone cannot find the straws at Micheal’s (mine was out) check with Joann’s. I got them to hold some for me to pick up tomorrow.

IT LOOKS AMAZING! I faffed and made mine using more straw pieces. I bought paper straws for my daughter’s birthday party in July, and a cheap bag of pom-poms in a fit of crafty optimism hoping to make a pom-pom headband for her. As she’ll only wear a stuffed snake round her noggin this has left me oh-so smug and happy, as I over-bought on straws too. That lovely feeling that nothing from her first birthday was wasted is delicious, and I have extra garland now. Yay! Thank you for this.

Did you get the Pompoms with the hole in them or did you hot glue them on? Having trouble finding vast amounts of the thread able ones.
