I never met a scarf I didn’t like. It’s sort of a problem.
Everybody has a “safe gift” – something that they will always love, no matter what it looks like, no matter how much (or how little) it cost. People know they will like that gift, so they tend to get it a lot. For me, my safe gift is a scarf. People give them to me because know I like them and I wear them. A lot. With everything. There are people I work with who have probably never seen me without a scarf. And earrings. A scarf and big earrings – that’s my combo. Tuesday I went to work wearing an entire outfit procured from the pajama section at Target, but nobody knew it because I was also wearing a scarf and big earrings.
Listen, it was a really good scarf.
When the folks at Scarves.net contacted me about doing a giveaway, I jumped at the chance. I almost never do diveaways but this one was a pre-holiday must! Not only can you pick up some great gifts (at very reasonable prices, I might add), you can pick up something cute for yourself. Go on now, get yourself something cute. You deserve it. Santa said so. Yuh huh, he did.
But wait! There’s more!

I knit scarves. I have made flannel scarves. I made a ropey teeshirt scarf that I couldn’t give away. Plus I love scarves too! I have been reading your blog for a couple of years. Please keep up the good work. Thanks a bunch, Karen

When I was in college, I learned how to knit. That year I started knitting, Christmas was like, “scarves for everybody!!!” But I do like getting/making scarves for people anyway. Always a good gift!
Anonymous
I made scarves a couple of Christmases ago for the Aunts and Grandmothers in the family. It was such a fun project and everyone seemed to enjoy them! But who doesn’t love scarves? They rock!
mandy
I make a lot of scarves for people and looove scarves. I am currently making one for my boyfriend’s mother, who is one of the sweetest people I know.

I have made a scarf for my college room-mate once. It had to be worn in knots, because it wasn’t exactly the same width on each end…ahem….

I usually knit up a few scarves for myself and others (although this year, I’m knitting washcloths, which are awesome, by the way). But I do have a collection of other scarves for wearing, and for using for teaching bellydance! (hey, they work great in a pinch)
Deb
Have I ever made scarves for anyone. I…um…crocheted 26 of them for Christmas this year. Does that count? http://www.debscupoftea.com/2013/12/26.html
P.S. I will still make that color chip Advent calendar you liked. It’s just going to take a bit. Now that the scarves are made, I have to ship them.

I knit a scarf for a friend of my roommate’s when I was in college. I hate knitting, but she ended up marrying him, so I guess it was worth it. I think it was the last scarf I knit. Though, I did make my whole family fleece neckwarmers for Christmas one year, if that counts…
Den vesle bjørnen
last week I made a infinity scarf as a christmas present for my best friend . White and blue with drawings of strange/ wierd men .. you can twist it two times around your neck and hide the strange men, and the scarf looks normal ,but when you take it of -voila- drawings of strange men drinking coffee…nifty huh ?
Dropout!
I have knit and crocheted scarves for myself, a friend, and a boyfriend. The one I still have is terrible, ends in the middle of the long edge, horrible colors, but I still love it and wear it in public, goddammit.
Susan
I have never made a scarf but my grandmother made me several. Now that she is no longer with us they are my prize possessions.
Anna
My best friend’s mom made me Harry Potter Gryffindor scarf in 9th grade that is nine feet long, knit in a double round, and the warmest thing I own. I still use it in college and get comments.
Kylie McGowan
My aunt has made me a few scarves but I am inept when it comes to sewing or anything involving multiple steps, so I just buy them for people.

Yes, ma’am! I’ve woven quite a few

My best friend has knitted a few scarves for me. It’s pretty sweet of her. 🙂

I am about to embark on making a scarf for my brother’s serious girl friend. We have nothing in common, but I think a scarf will do quite nicely! Plus the best part is that I don’t have to pry about her size!
Heather
Back when I was a poor college student I had my grandma teach me to crochet so I could make everyone scarves for Christmas. That first year was kind of scary, but I’ve gotten much better. Even though I can now afford gifts for my family, I’ll still usually include a handmade scarf with their gift every year!

A friend of my mom’s knitted a scarf for me. A beautiful but terrible scarf that unraveled itself the first time I wore it. Ten years later, its stupid unraveled self is still hanging in my scarf area, ’cause I’m absolutely with you – can’t throw them away!
Nutbird
You can unravel it and re-knit it. Try it, it’s not hard. Ann

Woolly scarves remind me of my mum. She helped me knit my very first scarf, back when I was fourteen (eight feet long, rainbow fluff with black ostrich feather stripes, VERY cool), then we would sit together on winter evenings, knitting. When she lost her hair with chemo I made scarves to keep her warm, while she knitted special gifts for other people. The one I remember most was the scarf I made to match a new outfit she had. It was too long, and curled in on itself and was generally a failure… But she wore it often anyway, and every time she put it on she said she loved it. My sister wears it occasionally now, and even though it’s probably the clumsiest scarf I’ve made, it’s pretty special.

I started a scarf for my sister last year, but I didn’t finish it. Thanks for reminding me, Peaches. I can gift it to her this year! I used this tutorial: http://dollarstorecrafts.com/2011/07/make-the-worlds-easiest-crocheted-scarf/ It’s a super simple one, but cute! Also…I just want to say that I have been without regular internet access since August…..so I’ve been having an Aunt Peaches marathon for a few days. Missed you!!!

Yes, I have. I have knitted lots of scarves. I even have a silk scarf almost done, thanks for the reminder. I buy silk at a fancy fabric store and hem them on my fancy serger. When I was little, my mother would buy a length of plaid wool in the shape of a long scarf. She would hem every side and sew tassels of yarn on the ends. The scarf had to be long enough to go over my head. Also long enough to wrap around my face twice if I wanted to play in the snow. I would wear my wool scarf with my storm coat (pronounced Stahm in Massachusetts.) Storm coats were gabardine double breasted coats with fuzzy fake fur on the collar that you could button up to keep you warm.

I stink at knitting 🙁 My mom did knit me a scarf when I was young.

A few years ago I bought some white and black yarn at Michaels. When I knitted it up to make a plain narrow scarf, the black spots turned into bumble bees! I guess it was planned that way.
Kristin
As a knitter, I’ve made many scarves for myself and others. My absolute favorite is a super soft and cuddly scarf knite from an apple green merino and silk blend. I need to acquire moree of that yarn in other colors so I can have a rainbow of soft and cuddly scarves!
Jennifer
I tried crocheting this year and started a scarf…but I got frustrated and it wound up being an oddly shaped dish cloth instead. I have been given a few scarves but none of them were handmade.

Years ago in a state of newly-wedded fog, I decided to crochet a scarf for my husband. Never mind that I had only ever crocheted loose bits of string that I would find laying around the place. Never mind that I had no idea how to turn a corner or count stitches. Many hours and many many curses later, I presented to him the world’s longest, most irregularly shaped scarf. It was taller than he was by a good four feet–so when he draped it around his neck the ends hung at his knees. And it was hourglass shaped…if hourglasses were created by men with a serious case of the shakes.
And bless his heart if he didn’t wear it every day for a week–despite the fact that we were living in southern Oklahoma and it was in the 60s for the entire month of December.
Three houses, two kids, and ten years later I have no idea whatever became of that scarf. I suspect it is still in Oklahoma somewhere. I like to imagine in draped across the shoulders of an appreciative bison.

I knit scarves on my knifty knitter sometimes not recently though, haha. I’d love to try a cowl.

I’ve bought the supplies to make a scarf, does that count? 🙂

I went on Youtube and found this guy who does crochet tutorials. He is fantastic! I was actually crocheting and doing these intricate beautiful stitches. I was on my way to making a scarf. Went and bought all this really pretty yarn and I got as far as a square. I use it as a doily. I’M A SQUIRREL, DANG IT! I am intently working away and then something shiny and new gets dangled just…off…to…the…side — gone! I am gone to the next project. My beautiful craft room is full of half finished projects.

When I re-taught myself to knit a few years back I’m afraid I went a little knit crazy..I was handing out scarves to strangers after my friends and family yelled “NO MORE!”

My sister in law makes up some great scarves.

No but I wish I knew how to make them.

I can’t sew, knit,or crochet-but I made one scarf for a friend. It was a Rapunzel scarf, where you just cut long lengths and braid away! I used yarn, lace, ribbon, ect. It turned out nicer than I expected!
SuzyQ
No one has ever made a scarf for me -although my Mum once bought me an amazing scarf out of nowhere- but I have made a few scarves for friends. I can only knit …well, the only way I can say it is “flat things”. No knitting in the round for me, sadly. But I make lovely wide-striped scarves that men and women both love. I like to give them as holiday gifts!
MerMarty
I’ve started probably half a dozen scarves over the years, but I’m embarrassed to say I only ever finished one! mer.marty@yahoo.com

I have a friend who periodically takes up knitting, as I do, and she’s got a basket in the corner of her living room with her projects. For about 4 years, she’s had a mauvy colored skinny scarf half done, wound around a ball of yarn. Everyone so often, when I’m over visiting, and we’re watching a movie, I do I few lines of it and stick it back in the basket. So yeah, I guess you could say I’ve been making her a scarf.
Brittney
My 3rd graded teacher taught the entire class to knit, boys included. She would read to us after lunch and we would all knit away. Made my first scarf when I was 8.
dagan
I’ve knit several, including a Star Wars themed intarsia design. That’s probably the most complex I’ve done! I found a lace pattern that actually makes a warm scarf while looking lacey, so I’ve done a lot that way, too. Thanks for the giveaway: I’ve just started to incorporate scarves into my wardrobe!
Suzanne O'Mullan

I have made many scarves for people, aunts, friends, and this year I am knitting a scarf for my dad for Christmas.

I think my mom is knitting this big fuzzy warm winter scarf for me just now, despite me having so many that I get scarv-a-licious with every outfit. It’s essential to have a matching scarf for every outfit. I blame momma for this because when I was little she used to knit and crochet and saw scarves and hats for my every dress so I never left the house without ones. So if Santa said so, I’m gonna try to get myself some new scarves, yuh huh I will.

I’ve knit scarves for family members, but I’ve never made (or owned) a fabric one. What luxury!

My mum’s hobby is painting silk scarves, so I get at least one every year. I am yet to meat a person not fond of scarves, so I usually knit some as gifts for the holidays.

I’ve knit & crocheted many scarves for my family over the years, but this year I’ve just started exploring fabric scarves- so pretty! My problem is that I’m usually too warm for a scarf indoors 🙁

My nieces are huge Green Bay Packer fans so I made them scarves from Packers logo printed fleece. Actually I just cut out a long rectangle and cut fringe on the edges – does that still count?!

A hundred years ago I determined to crochet my mother a scarf out of variegated green yarn. It ended up about 6 feet long, 12 inches across on one end and 5 inches across on the other. Much to my embarrassment, she wore it for years and even today will drag it out of the coat closet when I am visiting to show my that she still has it and would never part with it. Truly a mother’s love because I know she hates it as much as I do:O)

So far my scarves are double teaming the two sets of hook hangers from Dollar Tree.I’m happy to triple team if I’m chosen.
I have a wonderful eight foot soft wool scarf that my son knit for me during his first year at college. Other than a beanie for himself, he hasn’t made anything else in the sixteen years since.

I have three beloved hand-woven chenille scarves — two were purchased from the weavers and the other (a a gorgeous green from the now-shuttered Churchill Weavers of Kentucky) was thrifted for $1.49. I don’t own, but admire the Tom Baker Dr. Who scarves — and I fantasize that someday I will make a cotton version, since the internet abounds with dr-who-scarf tutorials, suggestions, and tips. Lynne

Yes, I’ve made many scarves for friends and family. And when I say “family” I mean it – apparently my scarves are SOOO long, my sister and her three kids used it as a wrap while snuggling on the couch watching TV. Oops. But hey, when something’s made with love, who can throw stones at it?!?!

This is a great giveaway, Peaches! Strangely enough, I am making a scarf for a friend for Christmas this year! I’ve made others through the years too. If I won, I’d get scarves for my daughter and friend.

i have had a scarf made for me. it usually doesn’t get cold enough to wear it very often here in southern california…. i do have many estate sale treasures that i wear… more often in my hair and around my waist.

I found the gorgeous silk one year. I cut a 39-inch square and gave it a rolled hem. I made it for a friend – she loved it.

My grandma taught me a couple of basic crochet stitches when I was 19 and I decided to make a scarf for my mom that year for Christmas. I didn’t tell her I’d been learning to crochet so it was an extra surprise when she opened that handmade gift! Now three years later, I’ve taught myself how to read patterns and have been making lots of other gifts for my family.

I’ve made and worn lots, but my favorite project was a ‘Dr. Who’ scarf that I knitted for a teenaged Whovian boy. I was living in West Virginia, and a foster parent, and the local unofficial Dr. Who fan club met in my living room to watch old Dr Who episodes on PBS. It was mostly misfit boys who had landed in the foster system. The fourth Doctor Who (played by Tom Baker) wore a very, very long striped scarf, and one Christmas I knitted a copy of the Dr. Who scarf for the loneliest, gangliest, most pimpled boy in the group. He loved it, and for years afterward, when he’d aged out of the system and was living pretty hand-to-mouth, neighbors would say, ‘I saw that kid with the weird scarf downtown. Some winters, it was the only way I knew he was still around and (sort of) ok. Don’t live there anymore, but like to think it’s still in the Appalachians somewhere.

I got a scarf from my best friend when I was younger. She crocheted it and gave it to me as a Christmas gift. It was a light pink and the crocheting didn’t hold up very well, but I still have it! Scarfs are my mom’s “safe gift” and I borrow hers all the time because she has so many! Yay for scarves! I think you just convinced me to buy her one from scarves.net!

I have made many scarves out of many materials ranging from voile to fake fur. Also one out of lace, leftover threads, and dissolvable solvy which went into my overflowing experiment basket (to be used for something else altogether).

The last scarf I made was knitted out of eyelash yarn. I knitted them in red, teal, turquoise, and blue. The best scarf I made myself was after my relationship fell apart. I hemmed a glittery dark blue metallic fabric then beaded the bottom with strands of ‘oil on water’ seed beads tipped with a silver feather.

One year I got on such an epic scarf knitting binge that ran when they saw me for fear I would wrap one of my acrylic wonders around their Texas hot necks! I love scarfs and wear them even though they make me sweat!

I’ve made a lot of scarves, both knitted and sewn, but the last one I made was knitted from the pattern for the scarf worn by the lead actress in the “Black Swan” movie. Unfortunately, the person I gave it to has never worn it 🙁

me British mum is a knitting fiend– I get scarves for CHristmas and washcloths at Easter, but I haven’t ever ventured into fabric scarves

My Nanny has knot countless scarves for me over the years, and it’s apparently contagious because I’ve knit 3 for my Mom in the last 3 years, and one for my husband. Mom wears them, husband doesn’t, that’s why he only got one….

I’ve never made a scarf for a human, but when I was little I worked some accessory magic using kleenex that I doodled on with marker and tore into small strips for scarves for my Barbies-and for Ken. That’s just how I rolled.
Rachel Stuart-Haas
Yes, I sewed it myself. It looked horrible, but they smiled and thanked me anyway. I love scarves..esp red! And one day I will master the head scarf as well. One day

Oh man…I’ve lost count of how many scarves I’ve made people. My first knitting/crochet project was a fugly scarf (more like misshapen heap of hot mess) that I turned into a cat bed. Later on when I got better, I made one for the guy I liked and now we are married. I’m actually wearing a cowl I made as I type this!

I have knit a few scarves for people that went pretty well! it is a great sort of last minute gift! Last year i made a giant cozy cowl for myself and it is the best!

My ever-creative mother knew a lady who would crochet scarves for everyone she knew, so mom asked her to make one for me for Christmas. I do not know what happened in the communication process, but I’m 5’9″, and that royal blue 10-inch-wide scarf is almost as tall as me—when it’s folded in half lengthwise! Seriously–it’s almost 10 feet long. Wearing it makes me look like a bright blue Michelin Man.

Oh dear Peaches, I can’t tell you about the scarf I recently received from my dear Mom. Yes, she has discovered the joy of ruffle yarn. This fiber from the devil comes in a thousand colors and with the quick twist of a crochet hook turns out ruffled scarves by the mile. I love my Mom but dang, really?

I knit myself a red scarf back in high school and it was the wonkiest thing ever, perhaps because it was the first thing I ever knit! I held on to it for a few years but never knit another scarf after that.

I did not inherit the homemade scarf making gene. My mom is an amazing knitter and crocheter. She’s one of those people who can knit without even looking at what she is doing. Every few years I convince myself that I need to learn how to crochet but I give up after about 5 rows. I’ll stick to sewing….

I have never made a scarf for anyone, which is probably a good thing since I wouldn’t know where to begin. However, a former co-worker did make a scarf for me. It was made from Polartec fleece, so it wasn’t super fashionable, but it was warm and thoughtful.
