For Cool Kids: Watermelon Jean Jacket

Inevitably, every summer, a few trends pop up and weave their heads through the surface of American culture like a bad rash. Sometimes it’s a pattern. Sometimes it’s a brand. Sometimes it’s a song (I’m looking at you Robin Thicke!). Normally I’m not a fan of the summer trend train, but this year it’s one I can get behind: Watermelon.

Stuff with watermelon prints have been popping up all over the place. Including my house. A while ago it occurred to me that I really wanted to wear something watermelon print to the first day of school. Nevermind I haven’t had a first day of school in many years, I wanted a cool outfit. I wanted a watermelon jean jacket with matching hair barrette and alternating green and pink scrunch socks. Was that too much to ask?

No. I think not.

So. I may not have the wholllllle outfit, but by the ghost of Josh Harnett’s career, I got my watermelon jean jacket. I will be the coolest kid on the non-existent school yard for 30-something year old adults. SO AWESOME.

Successful Tie Dye – a first!

Remember a year ago when I attempted to reverse bleach die my curtains dark blue and everything tasted like pool water for days? Yeah. This is not that.

Remember when I tried to tie dye my bedspread shibori inky dark blue and it came out looking like Finding Nemo blue? Yeah. This is not that either.

This is the first, best, and easily the most successful venture into tie dye I have ever had. Check it!

Boom. Now that’s what I call a duvet. It’s rad and bohemian and interesting and earthy…and yet totally does not look like I’m living as a Phish roadie. (although, no judgements on that front).

Even my cat loves it, and she doesn’t like anything.

Two-Tone Clothespins

Ask me if I’m excited about clothespins. Just ask me. Go ahead. Ask me if I’m …DID SOMEONE SAY CLOTHESPINS?

I don’t know why they get me riled up. Something about being old fashioned, which is totally illogical since,  by the grace of Snuggle The Fabric Softener Bear, I have never had occasion to hang laundry outside. As a concept, clothespins strike me is rather exotic. Conversely, there isn’t a homely basement in America that doesn’t have a few clothespins hanging from a yard of cotton twine on the rafters. They old. They are homey. They are everywhere (especially the dollar store). And now mine are all dolled up and ready to party.

Party on, Wayne.

This craft is so easy it might not even count as a craft (see for yourself). You can make hundreds of them very little money and give them away as gifts. Not that anyone has ever listed clothespins as a gift, but whatever, you will want them. Next time someone is over at your house and they see your mail has a hot pink and turquoise clothespin, they’ll be like, “Whoa where’d you buy that gnarly two-tone clothespin?!” and then you will know I am right on this one.

Easy Watermelon Tablecloth

Eating watermelon makes me feel like a rebel. Easily, it is the most badass fruit.

See, I don’t know about you, but I grew up in a “no eating watermelon in the house” type of house. Too messy. Too sticky.  First you give a kid a slice of watermelon, next you find slimy black seeds in the sock drawer. No good. My parents were hardly neat-nicks but that was one battle they refused to wage. Watermelons were only for outdoor consumption. In the summer. Preferably in a swim suit or something suitable for a good hose down. One time, at a birthday party, while wearing a nice dress, I ate a whole slice by myself and didn’t get anything on me. It was amazing. You know how in the movies when people rob liquor stores and then the hop in the getaway car and pound their chests and jump and holler all crazy like? Yeah. That’s what it felt like. Watermelon! Indoors, baby!

Well, this isn’t like that. You don’t actually have to eat watermelon to get your fix. Inside or out. This tablecloth is easy to make in an afternoon. It requires almost zero technical skills and could make a great way to kill an afternoon with a couple of munchkins. Go check out the tutorial to see how it’s done. Unicorn Yarn Eggs in Under a Minute

A couple Sundays ago, Heidi came over for an afternoon craft session. There was yarn. There was glue. There was fun.

Is it weird to post an Easter craft on Saint Patrick’s day like this? I don’t think Saint Patrick would mind. I’m not entirely sure what leprechaun’s think of Easter eggs, but I’m pretty sure they would approve. I suspect, if a unicorn could lay eggs, I’m pretty sure this is what they would look like. I’m not sure that leprechauns and unicorns are best buds but they both hang out by rainbows, and, for a good two years in the 80’s there was a unicorn on the cover of Lucky Charms cereal boxes, and that makes them Irish for sure.
