I decided I needed some non-scary Halloween flair at work, so I made a sugar skull out of a paper mache mask to hang up in my office. It’s festive right? And a little rhinestone action never killed anyone. And even if it did, big whoop, it’s the day of the dead after all.
No sooner than I show it off and my co-worker says, “I don’t get it. It’s a Mexican wrestler? At the ice capades?”
To which I said, “No, it’s a Mexican sugar skull. Not a Mexican wrestler. Obvioulsy.“
To which she said, “Dude, that is a tricked out Mexican wrestling mask. I’ll bet you a buck. Google it.”

I might owe her a buck.
i disagree. if someone were to put that sugar skull on my altar i would be one pleased spirit.
I’m w you, dagan.
Nay, that’s not a luchador mask. Luchador masks wrap around the whole head and are made of fabric. What you have there is a skull. A sugar skull. Two different things. You keep that buck.
I now all about the day of the dead and your sugar skull is fabulous.
Jo
Love it!!!
Don’t they say that nothing is new? And all creatives are derivative? Too funny
Agreed. I think we are all swimming in the same stimulus soup.
She doesn’t know what she is talking about! It’s just a little flamboyant, it has personality!
lol you might owe her a buck … too funny!
The masks were designed based on the sugar skulls made for the day of the dead, the theory is that the wrestler looks like death and is thus scary. So although your sugar skull is patterned the same way as those masks, the wrestler is imitating it, not the other way around. Keep your buck.
INTERESTING!
Aha! If I can get a Wikipedia article to back this up I’ll not only get my buck back, I’ll get hers too. Dolla Bills!
Thanks Joelle!
Joelle is right. Your co-worker owes you a buck.
I was supposed to teach a class on making sugar skulls out of clay, but it got cancelled. Now I have a tray full of undecorated skulls. I was going to paint them traditionally, but there’s something really appealing about all those sparkly bits….
Your workspace and your co-workers sound like so much fun! I love clicking over here. It’s a guaranteed smile.
a sugar skull out of paper machine now this is something I gotta try
I can’t decide who owes whom because I am caught by you assertion that decorating a severed head is the non scary decoration. Too funny!
