I think 2014 is gearing up to be the year of the pom pom. Eff this “radiant orchid” crap; pom poms rule. And not just because I have a have a crafty hard on for them and their 70’s nostalgia, or because they are inexpensive and kid-friendly, or because they come in awesome colors FROM THE DOLLAR TREE, or because I have a drawer in my home literally labeled “pom poms and awesome”…but because nobody can dislike a pom pom.
Okay. Now I typed that about nobody can dislike a pom pom and someone will have to be contrary and say pom poms suck, and that’s fine. Be that way. In the wise words of Kyle Richards, elder stateswoman of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, there will always be those who “look for tits on an ant” only this time we are not talking about tits we are talking about pom poms, and we are not talking about ants we are talking about everything. And I mean everything. You can put pom poms on anything.
Lookahere!
Guys, it’s a rug. Can you even imagine walking out of the shower and stepping into this candy colored pile of cheerfulness? No. You can’t. That’s why we have to hurry up and make one.
Did you know you can glue pom poms to balloons? Me neither. I’m slightly suspicious of the method as I’m terrified of the sound of popping balloons, but these are next to amazing so I might just have to suck it up.
These. I’m not sure what these are for but I want 100 of them. And if I never use them in the whole of my life I want them tied to my coffin. They are coming with me into the afterlife.
If you are not the DIY type, this might be a good way to get your pom pom on. I would wear this with my bathrobe to the grocery store.
You think I’m kidding.
Or if you are the DIY type, this necklace is very doable with some ball fringe.
And speaking of DIYing with ball fringe, does anyone have a cheap source for the stuff? I’m thinking it would be easy to make this curtain panel, but given the price per yard at my fabric store, I suspect I would save money just buying straight from Anthropologie. And where is the fun in that?
Can you even believe these fruity bits are made of yarn? The directions on that strawberry look surprisingly doable, too.
And bears. So cute. Not as cute as a green-eyed marmalade cat pom pom, but I know a cute yarn koala when I see one. The panda ain’t hard to look at either.
Question is, where does this leave me in my epic saga to reach new pom pom heights. My poorly picture frame and garland hardly compare to these acts of pom pom bravery.
le sigh.
The quest continues…
The mystery hangy things are glorious.
This is so not a sales pitch, just want to share this amazing 70’s pom pom craft book I found because the pictures are awesome! The parrots are kind of scary real. And pom pom flamingos!
https://www.etsy.com/listing/180684960/pom-pom-parade-craft-book-funky-70s
Ummm… that’s pretty amazing.
I just strung 400 poms for a garland! So crushing on them! And I agree, hundreds of the mystery pom pom thingie!
I have the tutorial for the bears & fruit Pinned, but the rug! I can imagine how soft & squishy it would feel underfoot, so of course I want one now. I really love that first necklace, too!
Yeah. That rug is making me contemplate how I have lived so long without one. I needs it!
You’re fun posts brighten my day! Thanks
🙂
Pom Poms are awesome… BUT, pom poms AND tassels together are even awesomer..like the mystery hanging things… I think they would look amazing on a Christmas tree, with a pom pom star on the top. They would also look great hung randomly on doorknobs all over the house.
I didn’t even think about Christmas ornaments. The hell? That would be AMAZING.

This is definitely the year of the pom pom. I’ve already seen so many pom pom ideas this year. Here are three more :
1. Pom pom rug w/ tutorial – http://www.homedit.com/diy-pom-pom-rug/
2. Polka-dot pom pom pillow – http://www.polkadotchair.com/2014/03/pom-pom-polka-dot-pillow-girl-glue-gun.html/
3. Pom pom party hats – http://www.polkadotchair.com/2014/03/printable-pom-pom-polka-dot-party-hats.html/
Super cute.
The $1 store is hit or miss, but the cheapest source I’ve been able to find for pom-poms in my area.
Same here. Dollar tree sells a bag of 80 grape size pompoms for a dollar, and honestly, I like the color combo better than the ones they sell at craft stores. Most pom pom assortments are really poorly colored — why is that? All the more reason why I need to try making my own!
Yarn Bombing! This does it for me, in reaching the pinnacle of pom-pomming! I mentioned you in the post, quite some time ago!! Maybe I forgot to send?? Here ya go, from Lion Brand yarn and this blogger:

OMG. NOW THAT IS A CHAIR!
In my town (Evanston) they have started a formal initiative to yarn bomb municipal structures in one area. It’s quite the thing. I love it!
I feel like I shouldn’t want a rug like that big enough for the floor of a whole main room, but I do. In all of those bright colors (if not brighter, if not more colors).
(I think I’m starting to suspect that subtlety and refinement are not my strong suits in interior design.)
Who needs subtlety and refinement when you can have glitter and yarn? Not me. That’s who!
I’ve had that rug on my To Make list for far too long! I think I need to take a day off work for pompom related activities. Those little bears are adorable too.
Pompom trim is SO freaking expensive. I nearly bought some recently to trim a blanket, but then realised I was about to spend £30 to trim a blanket which cost me £2. I couldn’t do it. xxx
Right? Exact same problem here. I feel like there must be some Etsy shop that has a hookup direct to the source, but I have yet to find. I’ll let you know if I do.
i so love the pom pom. got completely addicted to making them last year when i made a pom pom and beaded garland. now i have a yarn problem….and the itch to make poms all the time! this is a happy round-up!
Koala* 🙂
😉 duly noted. Thanks!
Serendipitously, right after reading this post, I ran into this: http://blog.mrprintables.com/making-flower-pom-poms-diy-pom-pom-maker/
It was meant to be…
This project would be a great way to make an art piece from those colored pom bouquet thingies you feature above:
http://blog.jessicacomingore.com/2014/03/pom-pom-wall-hanging.html
I also hate the sound of popping balloons! I love balloons but I avoid most balloons because of that awful awful popping noise.
A great (and cheap!) alternative to trim is pom pom yarn. It doesn’t have the same swingy effect, but you can’t beat the price. Several companies make different versions (just google ‘pom-pom yarn’). I got some on clearance for $2.50 for 54 YARDS! I think I’m going to make some curtains from it by doing a zig-zag stitch over the string connection between poms and then kind of push it aside and stitch under the fluffy part?

Pom-Pom! I’ve made one – attached it to my bookmark (so sweet)! Love the animal pom-poms (probably require a lot of practice).
