Got me a new coffee table! It’s sparkly and glass and gold and looks like my favorite math toy of yore: the spirograph.
Not familiar with spirographs? Lay your eyes on this piece of 80s cinematic masterpiece.
Note: I can empathize with the haircuts of all four people in that commercial. Damn I miss the 80s.
Like most good things in life, this new coffee table is inspired by something I saw on a PeeWee’s Playhouse commercial break, and came to reality by way of something really weird I found on Craigslist.
In it’s former life it was glossy wicker with a crazy brig around the middle. Very Golden Girls. And $25. You know I had to hit that. So I drove out to the boonies to get buy it. The former owner told me she bought it at a garage sale and intending to spray paint it, weave it with twinkle lights, then fill the cavity in the center with silk flowers. Not really the look I was going for, but you can tell the gal had swagger!
I got it home, sawed off the braid, and spray painted it gold.
Hachacha.
I’m diggin it. It feels modern and kitchy retro at the same time. It’s big enough that I can sprawl out, but the visible footprint is small, so the room doesn’t feel so cramped. Part of me wishes the base was metal instead of wicker, but for $25 you won’t hear me complaining. It’s here. It’s done. It’s awesome. Welcome home, spirograph coffee table!
love it!!!!!!!!! (and love the rug and sofa, did i mention red is my favourite colour?)
It’s actually a really dark orange, but you can’t tell from this pic. Red is my fav too but orange knows how to scratch the itch!
where are those great curtains from??
I made them. Fabric from Fabric.com. Can’t recall the name, but I think it was pretty vague ‘jumbo dot or something’ — sorry!
The table is adorable sprayed gold, but I am in love with your pillows! Where are they from? Or if you made them, what fabric did you use?
The grid ones are from H&M and the green banana leaf is from Furbish. Both those places have pillows for days. Wayyyy too tempting.
Cutting off the braided piece really helped make it look modern.
I miss my spirographs! I think my set must have come from a yard sale as a kid; as I don’t remember it having that very cool extra arm thingy.
Pee Wee’s Play house was a brainfest of creativity! I miss it
Have you ever seen the movie poster for the original release of Hello Dolly! Ms Striesand has tons of Spirograph flowers in her hat! LOVE it! Just bought a new Spirograph so I can get my cool back….adore your table! –Erik
Cool! Is that a bamboo made?
Love this! I just found your blog through Hands on as We Grow. I’m following you on Feedly now. Love everything!
Add a glass of wine and your summer evening is set. The damp, cool notice of fall tempered by smoke through fire and fireworks is
classic, comforting and mysterious. Also add spices just before using
the pumpkin for best flavor.
My grandma had that table, in fact I have a pic of my brother sitting beside of it when we were little on the fridge. LOL Way cool!
Where’d you get the glass top?
