The ugly Christmas sweater party trend has been coming up a few years, and I hope it sticks around a few years more! But. As much as I love a good party uniform, I feel like there should be another occasion to show off some serious ugly sweater fabulousness.
In my most humble opinion, the “ugly” part is subjective. I’ve never met a rhinestone I didn’t love. And, you know what they say: You can’t polish a turd but you can always roll it in glitter.
Not than an ugly sweater is a turd, but yeah. No. It kinda is.
Materials:
Felt
Tacky Glue
Sequins, rhinestones, buttons, glitter, fabric glue, fancy things from your craft stash you don’t get to use often enough
Wire
Sharp scissors
After you have a sweater template in hand (here is mine, if you want it), lay the shoulders over the folded edge of a piece of felt, then cut around.
After you cut out your shape (or make a whole bunch) you can decorate them, not unlike cookies. Pour on all the glitter and glitz you can handle! I strongly, strongly suggest a super-thick white glue like Tacky glue, as regular white glue can get absorbed into the felt before it does a good job sticking the stuff you want to stick, but that is just me.
I made a little hanger out of a 6″ piece of wire, then slipped it through the neck hole, added some more glue, and called it a day!
This would make a perfect party craft. If you are hosting, I would suggest you pre-cut the felt and twist the hangers ahead of time. Then just line a table with newspaper (or wrapping paper, after all…it’s Christmas), and a shoebox full of sparkly goodies and paint. Let folks make their own, sort of like a cookie decorating party. Then everyone can take theirs home at the end of the night (tip: aluminum to-go containers make transporting wet ornaments very easy (and are available by the dozen at most grocery and dollar stores)).
My friend Angie pulled together a virtual ugly Christmas sweater party (we are so 21st century!)…click around and see what everyone else made. Party on!
